A Love Song That Filled With Hidden Desire of Uncertain Relationship
Fushigi or Mystery is not your average cheesy love song. The song is basically an embodiment of uncertain love filled with hidden desires.
If you think Gen Hoshino is going to create a cheesy love song? Think again! As far as I know, listening through his entire discography when he creates a love song, he creates a song that embodied an adult relationship in a poetic way, and so was this song. But this is more like as he said a “sizzling” straight-forward love song.
As for the sound itself, the music reminds me of a lot of songs in the ’90s mainly something like Boyz 2 Men or Backstreet boys. The play of synths is complementing the sound of “gyun” in this song. But personally, this song is has a lot to say in terms of lyrics.
For those who don’t know, Fushigi/Mystery is a soundtrack for TBS spring drama called Kikazaru Koi ni wa Riyuu ga Atte, starring Haruna Kawaguchi and Ryusei Yokohama as the main leads. The story revolves around Mashiba (Haruna Kawaguchi) who is an influencer who starting to unveil her true self as she starting to live in a share house with three different people with different characters.
Back to the song, as I stated earlier, this song has so much to say in terms of lyrics. Why? Simple, the song basically tells you a story about two people who basically loving each other but too scared to admit it, yet they can only show their love from afar but longing to be together. The uncertainty that the other side won’t share the same love is scared them but deep down in their hearts, they do share the same desires toward each other
There is a part where to me justified the whole thing. This is the part where if i could put those days filled with my feelings for you into words, i just might be satisfied, but it’s still too far and too fragile. For me the part is reflecting how love is perceived today, they pretend as it nothing happened between them but they simply watching each other from afar. They think that it’s still too fragile by confess it to one another.
The uncertainty, the feeling of getting rejected, haunted them, so they decided just to pour their affection either on their social media or just pretend that they just simply a friend, but deep down in their hearts that’s not the truth. They witheld the true feelings, as they realize it would be painful if the other side didn’t share the same love with them.

Apart from that, the desires that they had is make them feeling uneasy. They kept imagining that they belong together, but the fear of rejection again haunted them. So this song for them representing their actual feelings

However they do believe that they have the same desires, and longing to experience skin to skin relationship like hugging or cuddling with each other but as I said previously, they just too scare to even said that “I love you” to each other and this is stated in many parts of the song. These are just some of the parts that stated about skin to skin relationship

So where is the mystery part? Well if you asked me, the whole song is basically a mystery. A mystery of uncertainty, the mystery of what is true love. a mystery will he/she would love us back, and probably much more. The hope that one side would love the other side is basically just a mystery that only God could resolve.
Overall, Fushigi is basically a love song that embodied uncertain love but at the same time hiding a passion for what is true love meant to be. This song reflects on how most relationship happens in younger generations.
The sound of classic RnB/soul song in the ’90s indicates that we will be taken to the era of nostalgia in Gen Hoshino next upcoming album (probably), and personally, I do really enjoy it and this a perfect song to calm yourself or just want to feel what it's like to be in love.
